Do’s and don’ts after cataract surgery?

Do and Don'ts After Cataract Surgery

For those who just underwent cataract surgery, you may be feeling relieved that the procedure is over but it’s important to remember that your recovery process has only just begun. To ensure a safe and successful healing journey after cataract surgery, there are many dos and don’ts to keep in mind.

Knowing what activities are safe for your eyes will help minimize potential risks of complications along the way, allowing you to get back to normal daily activities as soon as possible.

What to expect post cataract surgery?

When you wake up from cataract surgery, your vision may be blurry or hazy. This is normal and should improve over time as the eye adjusts to the new lens implant.

You may also experience some sensitivity to light in your eyes and a slight burning sensation, both of which are also common post-surgical symptoms that should subside within a few hours.

Recovery after Cataract Surgery: Do’s

  • Follow your doctor’s instructions closely. Make sure you understand and remember all the advice they give you regarding post-op care.
  • Wear protective eyewear when outdoors or in bright environments to shield your eyes from UV rays.
  • Take medications as prescribed by your ophthalmologist, such as eye drops and antibiotics.
  • Use cold compresses on your eyes to reduce swelling and discomfort after surgery.

Recovery after Cataract Surgery: Don’ts

  • Avoid rubbing or pressing down on the area around your operated eye. This can cause damage to the delicate tissue and lead to serious complications.
  • Stay away from swimming pools and  hot tubs for at least a week after your procedure.
  • Refrain from engaging in strenuous activities or lifting heavy objects since these can raise the pressure inside the eye and lead to further issues.
  • Do not drive until your doctor has cleared you, as this may put undue strain on your vision.

How Should I Sleep After Cataract Surgery?

When it comes to cataract surgery recovery, getting enough rest is essential. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the way you sleep can greatly affect your healing progress.

In order to get a good night’s rest, try sleeping with your head elevated and avoid lying flat on your back or stomach for at least  two weeks following the procedure. This will help reduce swelling and prevent your eyes from becoming irritated or uncomfortable.

You may also find that using a special pillow or sleeping mask can provide additional comfort and protection for your eyes during recovery.

In addition, try to avoid any activities that could raise the pressure inside your eye, such as straining during bowel movements or sneezing. If you feel the need to rub your eye, make sure you do so gently and with a clean tissue.

Finally, be sure to take all medications as prescribed by your ophthalmologist in order to promote faster healing and reduce any potential risks of infection.

When to see a doctor?

If you experience any signs of infection or discomfort, it’s important to see your doctor as soon as possible. Seek medical attention immediately if you notice any changes in vision, such as sudden blurriness, floaters, light sensitivity or pain.

By following these do’s and don’ts after cataract surgery, you can rest assured that your healing journey will go smoothly and without complication. If you have any questions or concerns about the recovery process, make sure to consult with your ophthalmologist for further advice.

Good luck!
