Infertility…Does it spell doom for you? But infertility is not as bleak as you might imagine.
If you’re concerned about infertility, the best thing to do is to make an appointment with a doctor, preferably an infertility specialist. He or she will start by talking with you & your partner about your medical health and habits. Infertility, mostly, is the result of a combination of problems, which makes a thorough examination important. Your doctor will probably ask you both about
- Your medical histories
- Your use of medications
- Your lifestyle and sexual habits
- a woman’s gynecological history
If you have seen a doctor about fertility problems before, make sure to bring all fertility-related medical records with you.
Once the interview is over, your infertility workup will likely begin with a physical exam and blood tests to check levels of female hormones, thyroid hormones, prolactin, AMH ,male hormones, as well as for HIV and hepatitis.
The physical exam may include a pelvic examination to look for genital infections that may contribute to the fertility problem. The doctor will suggest a complete semen analysis for the male partner to check for sperm count, motility, abnormal forms, DNA fragmentation index and other blood tests around the woman’s menstrual cycle on day 2 for FSH.
- Transvaginal ultrasound: To check the condition of the uterus and ovaries.
- Hysterosalpingogram: To diagnose fallopian tube blockages and defects of the uterus.
- Hysteroscopy: To see and photograph the uterus to look for problems.
- Laparoscopy: To look for endometriosis, scarring & other conditions
Not all women undergo all tests. Your doctor will guide you through those that are most appropriate for your situation. After the testing is done, about 85% of couples will have some idea why they’re having trouble getting pregnant.
