Hernia Overview

What is Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or body part protrudes through the muscle or tissue wall that contains it. In most cases, hernias are common in the abdominal area, in between the chest and hips.

What is the best treatment for hernia?

The best treatment for a hernia is a minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy). In this procedure, we make a small incision and insert a laparoscope. We then inflate the abdomen with harmless gas and examine the internal structure. Soon, we cut the inner abdomen wall and place a mesh to cover the defects and strengthen the tissue.

What is the cause of a Hernia?

Almost all Hernia is caused by some internal pressure or an opening or weakening of a muscle inside the body. This muscle weakness can be present by birth or can occur later in your life. The organ or part of the organ protrudes from the weak side due to the pressure.

Can a hernia go away on its own?

No, a hernia doesn't go away on its own, and the only way to get rid of it is surgery. Some hernias are small, and some are large. Some of them might not even need surgery. However, you need to consult a specialist to know what is the best treatment for you.

How to prevent getting a hernia?

There is not so much to do to improve muscle weakness. However, there are certain ways to decrease the pressure. For this, try to maintain a healthy weight, stay active, eat high-fibre food, avoid heavy lifting, etc.

Piles Treatment FAQs

Here are the frequently asked questions about Piles that our patients mostly ask in the OPD.

Do piles need medical attention?

Piles is a common condition that can affect both men and women. In most cases, piles go away on their own without any treatment. In severe cases, medical treatment or surgery is needed to either treat it or reduce discomfort, pain and itchiness.

What if someone doesn’t get a piles treatment?

As mentioned earlier, mild piles go away on their own within some weeks. However, if you are experiencing severe piles then pain and discomfort can hamper your daily activities. Furthermore, internal haemorrhoids can get trapped around the anus and lead to elevated discomfort.

Which foods to avoid during piles?

One of the causes of piles is straining bowel movements that happen due to constipation. Now, to prevent further constipation, one can avoid certain food items. The list includes white bread, meat, milk, cheese, processed food items, etc.

Are there different types of piles?

Yes, there are five grades of piles known as grades 1, 2, 3, 4. In the first grades, the piles don’t prolapse, whereas in the next two grades they prolapse on straining. Furthermore, in the last grade, the piles get permanently prolapsed outside of the anus.

How to manage piles during pregnancy?

You can eat right to prevent constipation during pregnancy. Try eating a high-fibre diet, drink plenty of water, avoid standing for a long time, stay active, etc. If you get piles during pregnancy, avoid straining for stools and consult a doctor for better treatment.

Fissure Overview

What is a Fissure?

A fissure or an Anal Fissure is a tear in the tissues that line the anus. Hard or large stools in bowel movements can result in a crack. It causes pain and bleeding during and after passing stools. Mostly, a fissure heals on its own in some weeks, but if it doesn’t, surgery becomes the only option.

What is the best treatment for a fissure?

If an anal fissure doesn’t heal on its own, further medical treatment is required. The treatment for a fissure may include non-surgical treatments like certain creams, injections, and medications. A severe fissure may need a surgery called lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS). During this surgery, the doctor cuts a small portion of the anal sphincter muscle to reduce pain. Moreover, surgery is the best option for people with chronic fissures.

Causes of Fissure

Large, Hard Stools

Constipation

Anal Intercourse

Chronic Diarrhea

Symptoms of Fissure

Blood in Stool

Crack in Anus

Lump around Anus
