Understanding Cancer: Causes, Prevention, and Facts
In a recent YouTube video, Dr. Sanjay from Sadhaf Hospital discusses the basics of cancer, its causes, and the most common types seen in India. He also touches on prevention strategies. Here’s a summary of the key points shared in the video.
What is Cancer?
Dr. Sanjay explains that cancer occurs when the cells in our body lose control over their division. Normally, our cells divide and die in a controlled manner, regulated by genes. However, when these genes lose control, the cells start dividing uncontrollably. This uncontrolled division leads to the growth of abnormal cells, which eventually form a mass known as a tumor. These cancerous cells can spread from one organ to another, which makes cancer particularly dangerous.
Why Does Cancer Occur?
Cancer happens due to alterations in the DNA of the body’s cells. Various factors contribute to these changes, including environmental influences and lifestyle choices such as smoking and alcohol consumption. These factors modify the cells in the body, causing them to grow uncontrollably.
Cancer Statistics in India
Cancer has become a widespread and alarming disease. According to Dr. Sanjay, in 2022, almost 1.5 million people in India were affected by cancer. This number is expected to rise significantly in the coming years. By 2025, it is projected that nearly 1.6 to 1.65 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed annually in the country. Furthermore, one out of every ten individuals will be diagnosed with cancer by the year 2025.
