कैंसर के इलाज के दौरान शरीर में क्या बदलाव होते हैं? | Changes During Chemotherapy? | Dr Tushar

Dr. Tushar Patil, a cancer specialist at Sahyadri Hospital, explains the changes that occur in the body during chemotherapy and provides insights on how to manage them effectively.

Overcoming Fear And Anxiety

One of the most common concerns among cancer patients is fear and anxiety. It is essential to eliminate these emotions from the mind and heart to take the necessary steps toward recovery. Chemotherapy should not be feared, as it is a crucial step in the journey to overcoming cancer.

Common Side Effects Of Chemotherapy

While undergoing chemotherapy, certain side effects are expected. These include:

  • Nausea and vomiting (though modern treatments have significantly reduced their occurrence)
  • Occasional constipation or loose motions
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Anxiety

Some patients may experience mild nausea around the fourth or fifth day after completing chemotherapy. In such cases, consulting a doctor for additional treatment is recommended. Very few cancer treatments cause prolonged nausea or vomiting.

Impact On White Blood Cells And Immunity

Another common concern is the reduction in white blood cells (WBC), platelets, or hemoglobin levels. To counter this, patients should:

  • Maintain a nutritious diet
  • Consult a nutritionist for a proper diet chart
  • Include antioxidants as prescribed by the doctor

In some cases, a reduction in chemotherapy dosage may be required. Patients should also be aware of the possibility of infections, ranging from minor colds and coughs to severe pneumonia or gastroenteritis.

Precautions For Infection Prevention

If symptoms of infection appear, such as fever, severe cough, or digestive issues, immediate consultation with an oncologist is necessary. If WBC levels drop significantly, infections can spread rapidly, requiring hospitalization and IV antibiotics.
