Difference Between Spider Veins And Varicose Veins | Spider Veins vs Varicose Veins
Dr. Kaurabhi Zade, a Vascular and Interventional Radiologist at Sahyadri Hospital in Pune, explains the differences between spider veins and varicose veins, along with the need for treatment.
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are a network of small veins that often appear on the legs. They usually do not cause any discomfort and are mostly considered a cosmetic issue. These veins are commonly found in females. Many patients visit the hospital expressing concern about the visible network of veins on their legs, especially younger women who feel that these veins are not aesthetically pleasing.
Treatment For Spider Veins
If spider veins are not cosmetically acceptable, they can be treated with a small injection in a procedure known as sclerotherapy. This procedure helps close the developing veins.
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are different from spider veins. They occur due to prolonged standing, causing internal veins to become enlarged. Patients with varicose veins often experience discomfort, heaviness in the legs, and swelling.
When To Consult A Specialist
Individuals experiencing these symptoms should consult a vascular specialist. An ultrasound is typically performed to assess the status of the internal veins, determining if they are graded as one or two, which informs the treatment plan.
Co-Occurrence Of Spider And Varicose Veins
It is possible for patients to have both spider veins and varicose veins simultaneously, as these are two distinct conditions. Importantly, spider veins can exist without varicose veins.
Treatment Options
If spider veins require cosmetic treatment, it can be addressed through a small needle prick, performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning hospital admission is not necessary. Sclerotherapy is used to control the expansion of the spider veins on the legs.
