Does Diet Affect The Skin? | Nutrition And Skincare

Dr. Kusumika Kanak, a Consultant Dermatologist and Cosmetologist at Sahyadri Hospital, discusses an important topic: Nutrition and Skincare.

The Impact Of Diet On Skin

What individuals eat directly reflects on their skin. Just as diet affects internal body systems, it also influences skin, hair, and nails. Maintaining a balanced and nutrition-rich diet can definitely benefit skin health.

Key Nutrients For Healthy Skin

Dr. Kanak explores what individuals should focus on in their diet to promote skin health:

Antioxidants

Regular intake of antioxidants, proteins, vitamins, and nutritional supplies is essential. Antioxidants can be found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts. They help reduce stress-induced damage and free radical damage to the skin.

Vitamins

Vitamins are easily obtainable from raw fruits and vegetables:

  • Vitamin A can be sourced from carrots.
  • Vitamin C is abundant in citrus fruits.
  • Vitamin E is found in nuts.

For those with dry skin, incorporating more carrots or vitamin A-rich foods can be beneficial. If individuals have a tendency for tanning, increasing their intake of vitamin C can help.

Proteins

Increasing protein intake is beneficial for skin and tissue health. Proteins assist with wear and tear. It’s important to include protein sources, whether vegetarian or non-vegetarian. Good options include:

  • Dairy products like yogurt and paneer.
  • Fish and poultry like chicken.

However, it is advisable to avoid red meat.

Hydration

Hydration is equally important in nutrition. Individuals should aim to drink 3 to 4 liters of water regularly. A balanced diet combined with adequate hydration will keep the skin healthy and glowing.
