Myths And Misconceptions About Kidney Stones

Common Misconceptions About Kidney Stones: Expert Clarifications

Dr. Parag Gulhane, a Consultant Urologist at Sahyadri Hospital, Hadapsar, addresses widespread misconceptions about kidney stones and their treatment.

Misconception 1: Can Beer Cure Kidney Stones?

A common question patients ask is whether beer can help dissolve or expel kidney stones. Historically, beer was used as a traditional remedy due to its diuretic effect, which increases urine production. This diuretic action may help in flushing out smaller stones. Additionally, beer can numb pain sensations, making discomfort feel less intense. However, beer contains 95% water and only 5% alcohol, with water being the component that aids in flushing stones out.

The Risks of Beer Consumption

Despite its diuretic properties, beer has numerous side effects that cannot be ignored. Excessive beer intake can lead to liver damage, severe gastritis, and unpleasant odor. It also impairs the ability to perform tasks such as driving. Given these risks, plain water remains the superior choice for hydration and aiding the natural passage of kidney stones. Drinking ample water can effectively flush out smaller stones without the side effects associated with alcohol.

Misconception 2: Should Dairy Products Be Avoided?

Another common belief is that individuals with kidney stones should avoid milk and dairy products. This is not necessary. Dairy products are essential sources of calcium and vitamin D, especially for those who follow a vegetarian diet. A single glass of milk can provide approximately 300-400 mg of calcium. The body requires around 1 gram of calcium daily for optimal health, and avoiding dairy can lead to a deficiency.

The Role of Calcium in Stone Formation

It’s crucial to understand that the type of kidney stone matters. While calcium oxalate stones are common, avoiding calcium-rich foods can paradoxically increase the risk of stone formation. This is because dietary calcium binds with oxalate in the gut, preventing oxalate absorption and thus reducing the risk of stone formation. Therefore, it is advisable to maintain a balanced intake of calcium, as recommended by a healthcare provider.

Summary

While traditional remedies like beer might seem appealing, they come with significant downsides that outweigh their potential benefits. Proper hydration with plain water is the most effective and safest method for managing kidney stones. Additionally, there is no need to eliminate dairy products from the diet as they are crucial for overall calcium intake and bone health. Addressing these misconceptions can lead to better management and prevention of kidney stones.
