What Should Be the Normal Weight of a Newborn Baby?

In India, the normal weight of a newborn male baby is up to 2.8 to 3.2 kgs at the time of birth. Whereas, in the case of a newborn female baby it is up to 2.7 to 3.1 kgs at the time of birth. Most of the time it is seen that the mother’s weight is very important in improving the weight of their newborn baby.

However, it is seen that a large number of healthy babies are born nowadays and they weigh up to 3, 3.1, and 3.2 kgs.

What happens to the weight of a newborn baby in the initial days?

Within the first 5-7 days after birth, your baby will lose around 5-7 percent of its weight. If your baby weighs up to 3 kgs after birth, then after 5-7 days, the weight will get down to 2.9 kgs. However, the weight gradually increases to 3kgs again after 7-8 days.

On the other hand, if your baby loses more than 10 percent of the weight within the first 5-7 days, make sure you immediately consult your pediatrician. Like if your baby’s weight is 3 kgs and if the weight comes down to 2.7 kgs, then your baby is not being fed well. Make sure you take care of the breastfeeding of your baby.

If your baby is gaining weight naturally after 7-10 days, it is known as healthy weight gain.

Ways to know if your baby is growing well and healthy

If your baby is urinating 6 to 10 times a day, it is an indication that your baby is healthy and gaining weight. Do not forget to consult your pediatrician regarding the weight of your baby and whether your baby is suffering from jaundice.

In India, the other category is the babies who suffer from weight loss. If your baby’s weight is below 2.5 kgs during birth, then he or she will fall under the category of ‘low birth weight babies.

However, if your baby weighs under 1.5 kgs, then your baby will fall under very low birth weight babies. But your baby will fall under as ‘extreme low birth weight babies, if your baby weighs under 1 kg.

Therefore, the lesser the weight, the more complications your baby will face.

Kinds of problems low and extremely low weight babies face

If your baby falls under the category of low and extremely low body weight, then NICU is very important. Your baby is kept under NICU with care for around 15 days to 2 months. Your baby will have organ problems along with weight loss and after 10 days. But gradually your baby’s weight will start increasing.

Why the babies lose weight after birth in the initial days?

When your baby is born, the body fluid of your baby is more. After the birth, the weight loss of your baby happens due to the loss of these fluids. Therefore, every newborn baby loses weight within the first 3-5 days and the weight gradually increases after 7-10 days.

Usually, the most important treatment is breastfeeding. However, if there’s a loss of more than 10 percent of your baby’s weight, make sure to consult a lactation consultant. Also, do not forget to check the feeding pattern and attachment of your baby.

However, if your baby is pre-term or overweight, he or she will need special medical assistance in these cases.

Conclusion

So, above mentioned are the issues relating to the weight of a baby, normal weight, and weight categories. Make sure to follow these steps mentioned above, to keep your baby healthy and maintain your baby’s normal weight.
