Third Trimester Pregnancy Complications & How To Take Care | Dr Sneha Deshpande, Sahyadri Hospitals

Pregnancy’s final phase, the third trimester, spans from the 28th week to delivery. This period is critical, with specific warning signs that may indicate complications requiring immediate medical attention. Here’s what to look out for and when to seek help.

1. Baby’s Movement

Monitoring fetal movements daily is essential. A normal range is at least four movements per hour, totaling over 12 in three hours. Reduced movement could signal fetal distress, warranting prompt hospital consultation. Consuming something sugary or cold may help stimulate movement, but if it doesn’t work, seek immediate assistance.

2. Pain And Tightening In The Uterus

Uterine contractions are common in the third trimester and are generally mild. However, frequent or intense contractions could be early labor, especially if they occur hourly. Consult your healthcare provider if you notice these symptoms.

3. Fluid Discharge

Any sudden discharge of fluid, resembling urine, could be amniotic fluid, which signals water breaking. Clear fluid is typical, but yellow or greenish fluid is more concerning and may indicate a fetal complication. Immediate hospital visits are advised to avoid infections and monitor fetal health.

4. Vaginal Bleeding

While a brownish mucus discharge is a natural early labor sign, fresh bleeding indicates possible placental issues. Conditions like placenta previa or placental abruption, often related to high blood pressure, require urgent attention to protect both mother and baby.

5. High Blood Pressure Symptoms

Signs of increased blood pressure include severe body swelling, persistent headache, visual disturbances, chest discomfort, and reduced urine output. If these symptoms arise, a medical checkup is critical.

Conclusion

Recognizing these third-trimester warning signs can help ensure timely care. Reach out to your healthcare provider if any of these symptoms occur, as prompt action is vital for both maternal and fetal health.
