What are Spondylosis and its Causes?
As much as we try to fight the signs and symptoms of aging, some foes are greater than others. And that is definitely the case with back pain. In some cases, the pain can radiate to other parts of the body, such as the hips or legs. If the pain lasts for more than three months, it is considered chronic back pain. Though not as common, a spinal problem in your upper back can also contribute to back pain symptoms.
One such spinal problem can be Spondylosis. Today, in this video, Dr. Jaydev Panchawagh- Consultant neurosurgeon, Sahyadri hospital is going to explain to us What’s causing your back pain? (Spondylosis Causes ). Before understanding Spondylosis Causes and causes of back pain let’s learn What is spondylosis?
What is spondylosis?
Spondylosis, there are so many misconceptions around this word for example when people feel dizziness or if they vertigo they always think it is because of spondylosis. But “spodylo” means bone of the vertebra and “osis” means disease. Spondylosis is a process that is caused to due aging, and everyone undergoes it to a different degree.

What are the causes of back pain?
There are intervertebral discs in between two vertebral bodies which form one spinal unit. These discs are like cushions that work as shock absorbers as well as ball bearings, therefore it is a significant structure in our spine. As we age this discloses its rugosity because the water content inside reduces and as a result the distance between two vertebrates as the disc becomes degenerative.
Whenever the body senses the relation between two vertebrates is undergoing some change. Its bodies natural reaction to send calcium to that region to ensure stability. That region gets surrounded by deposition of layers of calcium. This is spondylosis.
Along with that as the alignment of vertebra changes as the disc degenerates, the joints around vertebra which are called as a facet joint, they also get malaligned as the calcium gets deposited which causes the vertebral column to be stiffer and the pain starts.
This process starts as we age. In some cases, this process happens early and affects them severely. This deposited calcium starts exerting pressure on nerves or the spine. As the spinal cord gets compressed muscle below that compression level gets weak and this what are causes back pain. The patients start showing neurological symptoms, such as sciatica or shoulder pain (spondylolysis pain), spinal pain which travels along the arms. It’s possible to have spondylolysis and not even feel any symptoms. Back pain is the most common symptom of spondylosis.
If someone has genetically the spinal canal is narrow or spondylosis is severe due to genetics then maybe the person might have some problem. Spondylosis is not a disease but it’s a process of aging.
