How to Take Care of a NewBorn Baby?

In India, around 27 million babies are born every year. The babies born with the normal procedure weigh up to 2.8 kgs to 3.2 kgs. You need to remember two most important things, feed your new born baby with your breast milk and wash your hands before you touch the baby.

The babies who drink their mother’s milk have lesser chances of getting infections like, diarrhea, and pneumonia. Therefore, if you’re giving birth to a child, make sure to feed your baby with your own milk immediately after 30 minutes the baby is born. However, this is recommended by the doctors in both normal and scissoring delivery.

You also have to make sure that you feed your baby every 3 hours for the first 6 months. Do not forget to wash your hands before you touch the newborn baby. As the newborn baby is very sensitive and they have less immunity, they can get infections. Also, ask your relatives to wash their hands before they touch the baby.

Traditional ways to take care of a newborn baby

Here are some traditional ways mentioned below to take care of a newborn baby:

1. Do not start bathing the baby immediately after birth –

If your baby is newly born, make sure to rub your baby with a rinsed off wet cloth. Continue doing this for 7-8 days until the umbilical cord falls off. However, if you start bathing your baby immediately, the baby will catch a cold.

2. Do not massage the baby with lotions or baby oils –

Do not massage the newborn baby with oil or any kind of baby lotions as their skin is very soft and sensitive. However, you may start applying these on your baby’s skin after one month since birth.

3. Keep a check on weight loss –

Make sure to consult your doctor if your baby is losing weight after seven days of birth. When your baby is born, he or she will lose weight during the 5th or 7th day. However, your baby will weigh up to 2.8 to 2.9 kgs, this is known as physiological weight loss. But the normal weight of the baby comes back after 7 days.

4. Make sure to feed your baby every 3 hours –

If your baby is passing urine 6 to 10 times a day, then he or she is drinking your milk properly. Your baby may cry, spill out milk while you feed him or her, but these are normal.

However, if the temperature of your baby rises above 100 degrees or if your baby is not breathing properly, that is abnormal. Also, if you observe any yellowish, blue, or white texture on the skin of your baby, immediately consult your doctor.

If your baby is vomiting blood or the color of the vomit is green, make sure to consult the pediatrist as soon as possible.
