General surgeries available at Sahyadri Hospital

We aid our patients with all types of diseases requiring laparoscopy surgeries. The different types of surgeries we offer at Sahyadri Hospital are:

  • Cholecystectomy

Our well-versed surgeons mainly perform cholecystectomy to treat conditions of gallbladders like gallstones and other complications. The doctor will usually suggest you undergo the surgery if there are gallstones in your bile duct or gallbladder. S/He may also recommend surgery in conditions of gallbladder inflammation, pancreas inflammation because of gallstones, or the occurrence of large gallbladder polyps.

In this type of surgical procedure, the doctor will remove the gallbladder, which lies just below your liver and the upper right corner of your abdomen. The primary function of the gall bladder is to release and store bile juice that helps digest food. It is a widespread surgery where there is no risk involved. In fact, most patients are able to go back home the same day they undergo surgery.

  • Appendectomy

Appendectomy is another type of surgery that we offer at Sahyadri Hospital. It is mainly an emergency surgery that helps treat appendicitis. Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. When the appendix becomes inflamed and swells up, the bacteria start to multiply, causing pus.

Due to the formation of pus, patients go through extreme abdominal pain, and the infection starts spreading in the lower right corner of the abdomen, too. Other symptoms that you may experience include vomiting, nausea, and diarrhoea. It becomes necessary to take treatment for such conditions; otherwise, it can become a life-threatening disease.

  • Splenectomy

People undergo splenectomy surgery to remove their spleen. The spleen is an integral part of the human system. It acts as the body’s defense system. The organ contains white blood cells, which help destroy bacteria and fight off all disease-causing bacteria. Its main job is to filter red blood cells and remove old ones from circulating in the body.

When the doctor removes only one spleen, it is called a partial splenectomy. Once the spleen is removed, it does not regenerate like the liver. The doctor may suggest you to undergo the surgery when you experience a ruptured spleen and are under the threat of the spleen opening up anytime, causing a life-threatening situation.

  • Nephrectomy

We at Sahyadri Hospital also carry out nephrectomy to cure our patients of kidney cancer. Our highly trained doctors remove kidney which has cancer or any other injuries or diseases in the surgery. Nephrectomy is also performed in conditions when a healthy person wants to donate his/her kidney to a person for transplantation.

There are two types of nephrectomy: partial and radical. In partial nephrectomy, only the disease-causing kidney is removed, whereas in radical nephrectomy, the entire kidney, along with the bladder, is removed.

  • Adrenalectomy

In this type of surgery, our highly experienced doctors remove either one or both adrenal glands. The primary function of adrenal glands is to produce hormones that regulate blood pressure, the immune system, metabolism, blood sugar, and other essential functions.

The doctor may suggest you go through an adrenalectomy in case your adrenal glands have grown a non-cancerous tumor and have been releasing too many hormones. It may also be recommended if the tumour is cancerous.

  • Thymectomy

The doctors perform a thymectomy to remove the source, which produces abnormal antibodies and gives rise to various diseases. In operation, the doctors remove the thymus gland when they find a thymoma in the thymus.

There are three main processes that the doctor may adopt in a thymectomy. These are transcervical, where they make a small neck incision, the transdermal through the breast bone, and the transthoracic through both sides of the chest.

  • Colorectal Surgery

Many people have colorectal cancer every year; it has become the third most common type of cancer in men and women. In such a case, the people may be required to go through colorectal surgery. It is performed to remove the tumour. The different surgeries you can opt for include local excision, polypectomy, laparoscopic surgery, and resection.

  • Fundoplication

Fundoplication is another type of surgery that our specialist may suggest you undergo in case of severe gastro-oesophageal conditions. If you are suffering from GERD, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, the doctor will attach a part of your stomach to your lower oesophageal sphincter, which further helps reduce acid reflux.

However, having surgery does not mean you can replace the other control methods of GERD. Even after having surgery, you have to make lifestyle and dietary changes to adapt to healthy living. The doctor mainly adopts this treatment option when other less invasive treatments do not show desired results.

  • Hernia

If you are going through a hernia problem, it is most probable to be treated only with surgery. Three surgery options are available: laparoscopic repair, open repair, and robotic repair. Our multidisciplinary professional team carries out this surgery in case of three conditions. First, if the intestine tissues have struck the abdomen walls, surgery is essential. This is because if left untreated, it may get strangulated, causing a blockage in the blood supply.

You may also require surgery if there is extreme pain and discomfort in the hernia. Third, if the hernia has strangulated, causing permanent damage and calling for a surgical emergency. If you do not cure it immediately, there is a high chance your intestine will die, and you will become seriously ill.

  • Obesity surgery

Obesity surgery includes gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries that help reduce weight. This treatment also involves lifestyle changes and diet plans to encourage weight loss. It is mainly recommended by doctors when there are no positive results from the exercise and diet plan set for you.

Surgery may also be recommended if you are experiencing a severe health issue that does not allow your body to reduce weight. Some surgery treatments reduce weight by limiting the capacity you can eat. At the same time, other processes limit the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. However, undergoing surgery does not mean you can ignore diet and exercise.

  • Embolectomy

The specialist removes an embolus from the patient’s artery or vein during this surgery. An embolus is a part from where the blood clot can break free. If left untreated, it travels through the body’s bloodstream and causes blockages in certain areas. When the embolus reaches the vein of lung areas, it causes a blockage, not allowing blood to pass into the lung. However, if the embolus reaches your brain, it can cause a stroke.

  • Thoracoscopy

Our specialist undertakes a thoracoscopy to view the insides of the chest and outside the lungs. The doctor uses a thin, flexible tube with an attached light and a small video camera known as a thoracoscope to perform this procedure. It shows every part of the internal organ in the monitor. The doctors may follow this procedure in case they want to carry out video-assisted thoracic surgery. It helps the specialist to carry out the incision safely.

  • Endoscopy

Endoscopy is another process in which a long, thin tube is inserted into the body to view the internal organs or tissue, which requires assessment. It is also essential to carry out this imaging process to help perform minor surgeries.
