What is stroke (Brain Attack)?

Stroke is one of the most commonly used words by people but in the medical language is means ” Brain attack”. It occurs when the blood vessels in the brain get blocked or break open.

This is a very serious condition and many patients may suffer severely if they get affected by this condition. But now there are various treatment options available in order to treat this condition. It is very important for people to understand that stroke is a preventable disease.

What Causes Strokes?

There are many risk factors for stroke, most important being the big 5

  • Diabetes
  • Tobacco Use
  • Cardiac Disease
  • Previous Stroke

Prevention of Stroke

If the person eliminates all these 5 risk factors, then the chances of getting strokes are minimal. Another preventive measure is proper exercise and a healthy diet on a daily basis. If a person makes this a daily routine, 70-80% of strokes can be prevented and this is an important step that people in the general population should take.

In case a person is suffering from a stroke, one needs to be rushed to the hospital, which treats strokes, and not a nearby hospital as they may not have facilities to treat stroke.

Early symptoms of stroke

  • Sudden weakness in one side of the body.
  • The face becomes crooked.
  • A person cant speak or not able to see with one or both eyes.

What does a stroke-ready hospital do?

In the Sahyadri Hospital, they have arranged a stroke code wherein as soon as the patient arrives an announcement is made over the system and the doctors who treat strokes rush to the patient.

A CT scan and MRI are done within minutes and the decision is made about how to treat the patient. In case of stroke, it’s important that it treated as early as possible because the earlier you treat the results are better.
